Paid parental and sick leave isn’t law there? I thought you guys had at least that one.
Often the government also pays for parental leave. Places like Australia it’s up to 26 weeks at minimum wage to help families settle in with newborns and new costs.
So, “temporarily unemployed”, basically. Right when people need income the most.
Edit: I more understand the “not in this economy” remark from Idiocracy’s intro, when the smarter couple is deciding to hold on having kids. It’s obviously a consideration around the developed world, but not really movie-worthy.

In the land of the free it’s the companies that are free to do whatever and people have limited rights
Nope.
At the federal level, there’s no laws covering any paid time off for anything. Sick, vacation, holiday’s, parental, etc.
We TECHNICALLY have parental leave, but COBRA is hedged in with so many caveats it’s useless for a lot of people.
Yea, but it’s not paid (federally), and unpaid leave is only guaranteed for people that work for companies with more than 50 employees.
Best we can do is up to 3 months a year of unpaid leave.
And best of luck getting another job to recommend you after taking it
