  • Then what happens? tRump becomes their fall guy, they replace him with Vance, and then everyone goes back to work while Vance completes the fascist takeover of government because everyone’s too tired to keep fighting, have bills to pay, don’t take Vance seriously, and tell themselves they achieved a victory by getting trump removed?

The republican party needs to collapse, and while taking away their cult leader will help that along, they’ll just replace him as long as there’s a clear line of succession, and right now that line goes trump->vance->mike johnson.

What needs to happen to effectuate a full collapse of the republican party is for their electability to become untenable. They need to be voted out of office in state, local, and federal elections in as many numbers as we can manage, until they lose their majorities and with it their ability to protect trump and rubber stamp his lunacy.

Once people see that loyalty to trump is a losing platform, moderate republicans can start primarying maga loyalists. When Dems have a more comfortable majority, they can tolerate more political risks such as platforming more progressive candidates. Whether you think that’s a risk or not is irrelevant, because the fact is that the DNC views it as a risk and will only do it willingly if they’re not afraid it might threaten their chances of gaining or maintaining a majority.

People keep saying “You can’t vote your way out of fascism,” and maybe they’re right, especially once fascism has tightened its fist. This is still the early stages though, and frankly it’s unclear whether their hold is solid enough to contravene the electoral process.

And frankly nothing else is going to get us out of this either, because no nation in history, let alone a dictatorship, has ever had the surveillance technology, military capabilities, and militarized police forces to the degree that the US government does today. You’re not going to fight your way out of this, and it’s naïve to think you will. I’m not happy about that, but it’s the plain, simple truth.

Besides, until the midterms come and pass, and unless they’re either canceled, manipulated, or tampered with, or the results are ignored, then the fourth sentence of the Declaration of Independence takes precedence over the third and fifth sentences.

If any of those things happen with the elections, then that would trigger the third and fifth sentences, but until then stop telling people the midterms are hopeless.

  • See, you have more experience in the matter than I do, hence the caveat that I’m not an expert. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Then again, I’d consider 128GB of memory to be fairly serious hardware, but if that’s common among hobbyists then I stand corrected. I was operating on the assumption that 64GB of RAM is already a lot

All in all, 106 billion parameters on 128GB of memory with quantization doesn’t surprise me all that much. But again, I’m just going off of the vague notions I’ve gathered from reading about it.

The focus of my original comment was more on the fact that self-hosting is an option, I wasn’t trying to be too precise with the specs. My bad if it came off that way

  • If Microsoft cared about privacy then they wouldn’t have made windows practically spyware. Even if they install AI locally in the OS, it’s still proprietary software that constantly sends data back to the mothership, consuming your electricity and RAM to do so. Linux has so many options, there’s really no reason not to switch.

Small LLMs already exist for local self-hosting, and there are open-source options which won’t steal your data and turn you into a product.

Bear in mind that the number of parameters your system can handle is limited by how much memory is available, and using a quantized version can increase the number of parameters you can handle with the same amount of memory.

Unless you have some really serious hardware, 24 billion parameters is probably the maximum that would be practical for self-hosting on a reasonable hobbyist set-up. But I’m no expert, so do some research and calculate for yourself what your system can handle.

  • Just because wikipedia was the most expedient source to cite on a Lemmy post, doesn’t mean I don’t read books. Stop making assumptions about me.

Hmm, brutal theocratic dictator or democratic referendum with possible constitutional monarchy. Tough choice. Oh but the US at least nominally expresses support for the possible referendum (in reality it’s more like opposition to the theocratic regime), so following the logic that anything anti-west is good, you choose the theocracy?

That’s not that surprising to be honest. Look, I hate trump and I hate agreeing with him even more, but a broken clock is right twice a day, and I’ve been in the background quietly cheering for Iranian self-determination since at least the New Iran movement in 2022. This isn’t about US foreign policy, this is about the Iranian people deserving better than the mullah.

You’re right, Syria was once great, and now for the time being it’s in Shambles. But you’re forgetting a key part of the picture, which is that Assad’s regime already had it in shambles. He needed to go. And although HTS has yet to deliver on the promise of a referendum, and they’ve had questionable relations so far with minority groups such as Druze and Kurds, calling them ISIS is misinformed. They broke with ISIS over ideological differences and disavowed any affiliation, it’s okay if they want to rehab their image to gain legitimacy and international recognition.

Also, I don’t consume Israel’s propaganda. Fuck off with that. Not everyone who is against the Ayatollah is pro-Israel, and just because Israel is conducting opportunistic agitation doesn’t mean the whole protest movement is an Israeli proxy.
