  • To remain in a liquid state CO2 needs to be kept under several hundred PSI of pressure and kept fairly cool. Even at only 40F CO2 boils at about 550 PSIG. In above ground tanks you need to worry about elevated ambient temperatures and if that CO2 tank gets to be over about 88F then that CO2 just straight up can’t be liquified. Above 88F you suddenly have a tank of supercritical CO2 which gets a bit more interesting to store for various reasons.

The deep ocean it actually a fairly ideal place to store liquid CO2 because it is cold and already under an immense amount of pressure.

  • This is kind of related to something that’s been bothering me lately. I’ve lived with unmedicated ADHD for my entire life which was originally incorrectly diagnosed as major depressive disorder. So spent over a decade repeatedly playing pharmacology roulette cycling through various antidepressants none of which worked (because depression wasn’t the root issue). All the while I was just barely holding down a job I could barely stand, alienating myself from everyone I knew, and just barely avoiding giving myself a shotgun slug root canal. Needless to say I was stressed as fuck.

Then I got properly diagnosed with ADHD, put on meds that actually worked amazingly, got a new job I loved with my newfound executive function, and generally got my life into shape. This just so happened to take place at the end of 2024. So, despite the entire fucking world falling apart around me and everyone being stressed, I am relatively stress free for the first time in my life. It’s a weird thing where everything globally is more fucked than I can even fully properly conceive of and yet despite that I personally have never felt better. The two things aren’t related but It still feels weird being happiest I’ve ever been when the world as I knew it is falling apart.

Anyways, that’s a very long way to say that sometimes stress doesn’t coincide with the end of the world.

  • I was actually tier 3 support. I just also happened to be the sole support for one specific area which meant even low level tickets from there got automatically directed to me.

Earlier hyperbole aside, I honestly fuckin love my job now. If I didn’t rely on having an income, I would still be doing this for free. But working a desk job drove me nuts. I’m sure it’s great for a lot of people but I just can’t do it.

As a current tradesman who is regularly burned, electrocuted, and cut on the job while rolling around in filthy crawl spaces, dragging 100 lb of gear up a ladder onto scorching rooftops, or freezing inside walk in deep freezers… working an IT desk job was way worse.

I would sooner stick my tongue in a 480V panel than have to go back to answering “printer don’t work” tickets.

  • My actual mortgage payment is probably just under $500. Taxes and insurance just put it at about $1000. I bought a nearly crack den quality fixer upper about 6 years ago in a moderately low COL area. In the truely low COL areas I imagine you might still be able to manage the same pricing today. It’s probably doable, just not anywhere most people want to live or with a house that doesn’t have a bunch of issues.
