Fun fact: the GIF image format actually supports still images. Occasionally, for some reason, people actually use it for that.
It’s great for certain images because it supports a restricted palette and doesn’t blur edges. It’s fantastic for sprites.
It’s not bad for 7-Ups, too
Historically, non-animated .gif had some uses. For example small border insets in webpages, when the limited (or non-existant) CSS wasn’t enough.
JPEG is awful at straight corners and lines, basically anything that isn’t a photo. PNG didn’t exist back then.
When you say historically, how far back are we going? I learnt html in 1999/2000 and was experimenting with the different save options in windows photo editor(?) on windows 98 or NT and that’s where I learnt about png and that it works on websites. I don’t think anyone else I knew at the time heard of anything besides jpg and gif for website images back then. But it did work and I used it on my Line Wars fansite on tripod.
PNG took forever to reach baseline usability. Obviously because of IE. I don’t remember exactly, but if you targeted IE you couldn’t use a lot of CSS features and PNG support was shaky at best. I think transparency in PNG just didn’t work.
We only had internet explorer in school. I think I didn’t even switch to old school Mozilla at home until after I finished sixth form in 2002, or maybe towards the end of my school days. PNG with transparency definitely worked on IE when I was making fansites on tripod or I wouldn’t have used it. I have a feeling I don’t have my old Line Wars site files anymore, but I’ll check next time I’m on the PC. I might have left them on floppy disks.

I don’t know how to add words onto a GIF
There are a few online options
- Tenor.com has lots of GIFs, and there’s a “CAPTION” option there
- https://ezgif.com/add-text allows you to upload or give URL of a GIF, then add text to it. At the end you can convert to MP4 for smaller file size.
E.g. I did the Tenor way first time, got a GIF of 5.6 mb! 2nd time, I put the URL for the Tenor GIF into EZGIF, added the text there, & afterwards converted to MP4 to get a 440kb file. Kinder to fediverse hosts than a 5.6mb file!

Oh for sure. I imagine it would be pretty difficult without having them like, baked into the gif when it gets made.
I mean, if Carney gets to complete his goal of undoing the damage Mulroney, Harper and to a lesser degree Trudeau did to Canada by coupling it so much to the US, and if Trump continues running the US into the ground that will happen organically.
Of course the biggest economy in the world and the nation that controls the most important reserve currency can engage in currency manipulation. To suggest otherwise would be unserious.

Let me suggest otherwise then. Currency manipulation only works when it’s done in the direction the market was already going.
History is full of examples of countries failing to manipulate their own currencies because they wanted to do it on the wrong direction. There’s no reason to believe a large country in the middle of a fiscal crisis can do it, and there are some reasons to believe that “most important reserve currency” status may not survive the attempt.
If they really do this, i think Europe and Canada would have no qualms crashing the US economy by simply selling off their US bonds, destroying the ability of the US to source money. I’d love to see it.
Well, we could see the might and awe of that power when its intervention in Japan fell almost completely flat. The only thing it really achieved was to convince the EU that the US is a rogue hostile country and that it needs to prepare accordingly.
How would someone who lacks even the most rudimentary understanding of basic economics concepts engage in “currency manipulation”?
