Who even came up with this ‘don’t speak ill of the dead’ bullshit? If someone was an awful person, then they were an awful person and everybody should criticize them for it if they want to.
What does them being dead change? The family will be sad? Well boo hoo, should have cut ties with the fucker when he was sentencing innocent children to death. Pretty sure their families are even sadder.
I think it’s more of a “don’t hold onto hatred” kinda thing. They’re dead, so let it go for your own sake, as well as those grieving. It doesn’t help anyone

I’ve always heard it as don’t speak ill of the dead at the funeral. Or wake or what have you I guess. Certainly it’s never been forever.
It’s because when you’re dead you can’t defend yourself.
But mostly it’s to protect the feelings of the living.
I think it works on a small scale when people who knew the asshole are still mourning, but breaks down when we’re talking about public figures who affect policy.

Many years ago my parents had a neighbor. He was a nice guy but annoying as all hell at times, so much so that my mom purposely avoided him at the pool. If she saw him she’d go out of her way to walk around to the side of the pool and be sure to not get in the water when he was in there. She spent months not being able to say 1 remotely decent thing about him.
Then he died unexpectedly of a heart attack. And suddenly he was the nicest person she knew, always so friendly and loved chatting with him, etc etc. I straight up called her out on it.
Nobody cares about the living. We make up for it by fucking their corpses into paste.
That’s one way to show respect.

Of course, you don’t denigrate yourself or others for the dead, but carrying their water would be real dumb too.
I will speak ill of the dead, I will speak frankly about the life they lived and if they or their family or their supporters are ashamed of it then that speaks more of their values than me speaking about their misdeeds. I get not focusing on someone’s failings but not remembering someone for their intentional actions is a disservice to their legacy and our future history.
If they’re ashamed of his legacy then why didn’t he or they try to right his wrongs?

Alas spell check wouldn’t fix the were or the are. When I see this I give them the benefit of the doubt and assume English is their second language. Still drives me insane though.

When learning a second language you usually learn it by reading and writing it, whilst you usually learn writing your native language long after you learned speaking it. These types of mistakes are characteristic for someone that learned a language by speaking it first.
Someone that learned English as a 2nd language would never write “are” instead of “our”, that’s a mistake that can only happen if you learned writing the language long after you learned speaking it
My first language is English. I just never excelled at it as a I have dyslexia. But 28% of Americans do read at Lv1 or lower. There is no reason to shame someone on literacy.

I’m a context before accuracy person. If I can understand what they’re saying and their point, I’ll let minor things go. I will go back and reedit my own mistakes though, over and over, because I can’t stand myself doing it. But I’m here for the discussion, not the grammar and spelling grading.
This is a rather natural conclusion once you realize all grammar rules are decided by some committee somewhere. They’re not some law of nature. That being said, it also pains me greatly to find mistakes in my own text.
Grammar only truly matters if not following a particular rule can actually cause miscommunication. Doesn’t happen often in common conversation though. Just laws and board game rules.
