When the US still had conscription, they implemented college wavers so rich and middle class (largely white) kids could avoid serving in Vietnam and only poor kids and minorities had to do the fighting and dying. Now we have an all volunteer military but since we don’t have universal healthcare or higher ed, we force our poor to serve in the military if they want those things.

I think part of the problem with this style of show is that they’ll write a new menus or drink specials that doesn’t lean into the strengths (if any) of the staff or take into account what people in the local area like to eat/drink. They just do stuff that’s interesting for TV. Plus sometimes the work culture is the real culprit and you can almost never change that without mass firings and if the owners the problem…

I don’t watch Kitchen Nightmares but I’m in the room from time to time when my dad watches Bar Rescue and and his whole schtick just comes across as really punchable

Considering how cheap life is in Russia, and how expensive recruitment bonuses are, I’m surprised they haven’t already switched to conscription which they have a long history of.

Not that I would work at a kitchen as bad as the ones on TV but having worked in restaurants, I’m surprised these kitchen nightmare type shows don’t have the host get punched by the staff periodically. Line cooks can be salty.

They have no choice about their lawful orders. These guardsmen were ordered to deploy against America and didn’t refuse. Maybe evil is a strong term but it sure sounds like Treason to me.

The guards job “in theory” is to help old people in hurricanes. It blew my mind at the time that National Guard units could be federalized and sent overseas. Wild that that is legal on any level. The whole point of the national guard is to defend the homeland and of course assist with natural disasters. That the President could strip the Homeland of it’s defenders to fight foreign wars was bonkers to me.

Weird as in historically obesity and wealth went hand in hand and not it’s flipped.
