If I had to guess what that person was referring to, I would have to guess sales, or senior mamager of some kind.
Interior designers. They act like they’re as qualified as architects or engineers, but they base everything on their gut. And when they fuck up a building they use their lack of real qualifications to absolve themselves of responsibility.
It took us three years and nearly $200,000 to unfuck the house we bought after an interior decorator cut out a load-bearing wall and turned an exterior space with strong airflow into an interior space with huge energy-sucking windows.
Interior Decorator or Interior Designer. They’re very different things.
- An Interior Decorator decorates spaces and requires no certifications.
- An Interior Designer does basic designs of Interior spaces (here’s the bedroom and here’s the kitchen) and requires a basic certification.
- An Architect designs buildings (here’s where the HVAC is going to be and this is what the roof is gonna look like) and requires a higher degree of certification.
- An Engineer designs the structures that support the building (here’s the engineered I-beam, and you require a drainage pond there, and you need a support column under that wall, and the foundation needs piers this deep) and requires the highest level of certification.
- A contractor ignores all of these people and fucks shit up
He was hired by the real estate flipper who sold us the house, so we don’t actually know what his qualifications were.
The other thing you’ll see a lot of are essentially fake certifications. The International Code Council (Residential Code, Building Code, Plumbing Code, Fire Code, Wildland Urban Interface Code, Swimming Pool and Spa Code, and pretty much everything structure-related but electrical code for most of the US) didn’t want to get too bogged down in the details regarding specific certifications since different jurisdictions have different ways they handle licensing, so lots of stuff requires a “Registered Design Professional” as kinda a placeholder.
Then jurisdictions adopting the ICC codes are supposed to amend the codes in the adopting ordinance to get more specific. I literally did this last week when updating the city to a newer code cycle (the ICC codes change every 3 years, and you never want to be the guinea pig on the newest so we went from 2015 to 2021).
But most places leave the language as written when adopting the ordinances, so you have groups like the “National Council of Building Designer Certification” that are essentially registration mills so people can claim they’re a registered design professional so uneducated hacks can build shitty buildings cheap.
That’s because people cheap out with their contractors. High-end licensed contractors will coordinate with all these people to actually do the back-breaking implementation work while all these people sit on their asses and watch.

The city I work in is an enclave with average new home buuld prices approaching 8 figures.
The super expensive designers and contractors on 15-million houses are the worst I’ve ever worked with in my decades of work.

Granted, if I had less scruples I can’t think of a better way to scam people than remote Reiki. I almost didn’t believe it.
