  • I was in a car accident. On my way back to the office from lunch out and this woman made a left turn from the opposite side in front of me. I basically t-boned her at 50-55mph. We were both okay, just shocked, but our cars were blocking the intersection. She kept saying I was going too fast and that she was driving home from church. I just sat down on the sidewalk waiting for cops and tow truck to show up. Funny enough I remember, even though my car couldn’t go anywhere, I turned off the engine, got out, and still locked the car.

I had to hitch a ride with the tow truck to their office so I at least had some shelter (middle of summer with no shade around) and wait for a taxi to pick me up. The other woman had her husband pick her up.

  • Would be nice to learn about other countries too.

I grew up in Indonesia and would like to know how much of what we were taught regarding the Dutch and Japanese occupations were actually true. I believe we weren’t even taught about the fact that the Dutch attempted to retake control after Japan’s surrender after WW2. What I remember we were taught was just WW2 happened and we fought for independence.

I visited the Netherlands last year and talked to some locals who said their history lessons around that was quite different than what I learned (how long were we occupied, how bad the situation was, and the battles that followed WW2)

  • Went to a pretty strict school with uniform/dresscode in Asia. One of the rules is we’re not allowed to dye our hair. One of my high school teachers was convinced that all Asians have black hair, so my hair that’s very slightly brown under sunlight cannot be natural. It’s so subtly brown that most people would say I have black hair. It’s just that he saw me under the sun with my friends who had blacker hair than me that he assumed I died my hair.

At first he gave me a written warning. I thought it was stupid so I ignored it. The next time I had his class, he pulled me aside and told me he was gonna send me home cos I still hadn’t dyed my hair back to black. I’d never really been in trouble at school so I didn’t even know what I was supposed to do. Since he was teaching a class, he sent me to the teachers lounge and find someone there and tell them I’m supposed to be sent home. Luckily the teacher I found there was someone who liked me and when I told her about the issue she just laughed and said that’s stupid. She let me hang out with her until the end of the period so I didn’t have to deal with the other teacher until she got a chance to talk to him.

  • I live in Australia but working remotely for a US tech company.

    • Unlimited PTO (company policy) that my boss encourages to take. If I take less than 4 weeks then I get paid (Australian policy)
    • Unlimited sick days
    • 16 weeks maternity leave at full pay (company policy), or 24 weeks at national minimum wage (~AUD 185/day) for Australian policy. Up to 12 months unpaid

I usually take 6-8 weeks a year of PTO and for maternity leave I’ll take the 16 weeks paid, and 8 extra weeks unpaid/minimum wage (depending on my spouse’s situation)

  • 🙋‍♀️ grew up with a religious mother, went to church every Sunday, did bible study and got baptized as a teenager. Then I went to college and continued reading the Bible on my own. Without anyone else shaping/interpreting what I read, I quickly disagreed with the text. It was interesting to see how much the church’s interpretation can differ from your own when reading the same text
