In my experience, people mostly hate “methods of improvement”. It’s easier in the short term to just tell all the possible future issues to fuck off, and then they can bite you in the ass later instead. This is sometimes rationalized some more, “not phrased correctly” or some such, but if no phrasing is good enough to take it seriously, then obviously the phrasing was not the issue…

When people say audio books aren’t reading, they mean one of two things: that it’s not literally reading words, which is true, or that it’s not “proper reading like I do”, which is gatekeepey and elitist and awkward. There’s a ton of individual differences in how you understand/retain information and which media are better for you.

I think the important part is how much you retain. Listening is more passive, but that’s no reason to gatekeep the thing.

Edit: but to be clear no, it’s not literally reading. Still a fairly common thing to say, kinda figuratively I guess, about audio books, which I don’t think is a problem either.

Not recently or suddenly, no, but I also go out of my way to shovel that shit away from the “front page” in much the same way you’d feel about shovelling shitty slushy snow at the ass end of winter. It is inherently a Reddit knockoff populated mostly with people who either are politically opposed “enough” to Reddit to actually do something about it, people who got banned, or both. A large proportion of the activity here is bot posts, from Reddit. It follows that shit’s going to be… reddit-y.

To address the political spam firehose, look into making adblocker filters based around the obvious keywords, I’ve been planning to do that for a while since Lemmy, rather conspicuously, only lets you block things in ways that suck. Worse than discord, over here.

Incidentally, from a Euro perspective, tons of “our” languages, and formerly English (thou/thee) have what is called a t-v distinction, named after Latin “you” (tu/vi) which depends on status much like “usted” in Spanish. There’s a list of languages which do this.

I’d imagine the same as ours: broadly speaking, random shit that just happened to show up one day. They’d just need fewer of them than we happen to use in English.

Pronouns as a word category aren’t as inherently linked to gender as you’d think, just commonly influenced by it. You’re presumably asking from an English viewpoint, where we happen to split some third person pronouns by gender. Finnish, for example, already doesn’t do that, their only equivalent of he/she/they is hän which, like “they”, goes for anything. Japanese has absolute shit tons of pronouns of all kinds, some of which are very gender linked and some of which are fairly equal opportunity.

The connection between gender gender and grammatical “gender” is kind of overrated anyway, speaking as a native of a language with gendered nouns. The name is misleading: people obviously have genders, but when generalized to all nouns it gets… arbitrary as hell. Practically it’s just an extra bit of information you need to memorize for each one. What would it even mean for a book to have a gender, and why is it what it is? (The answer is unfortunately “fuck you, that’s why” because natural languages aren’t required to make any logical sense)

On the upside, if you’re German you can make your news headlines real short and awkward to read. It’s like code golf, or something.

An afterthought to this is that, while every country thinks it’s special, the US thinks it’s real special, and the exceptionalist mindset is probably not helping.

If the feeling is bothering you a lot, you need to dig. Try to find out what it is you’re hoping for from that other life, that’s apparently missing in your current one. If it isn’t that bad, it’s really, really common and you can honestly try to just distract yourself so you don’t repeatedly compare your life to a literal, and rather vague, fantasy. That’s not getting you anywhere.

I think a core thing is that people need a certain level of variety, some more than others, and still it’s really easy to get caught in a groove. Society is not built for that kind of enrichment.

Generally the US is pretty anti-climate, especially currently, and pretty anti public transportation. There’s been a lot of talk about how the US looks exactly like what you’d get if the car industry did a shit ton of lobbying, like pedestrian-unfriendly urban design, jaywalking laws and that sort of shit. Exact prices and landscapes and such don’t particularly matter if nobody ever has any incentive to do the thing.

Will the categories actually help? I mostly find that I search for the username or site name, and then it doesn’t really matter if they’re in a folder.

It works but a bunch of the UI is clunky. A bunch of stuff ends up there when people should’ve been using a wiki or at least forum, and as always it’s pretty stupid to be centralizing on a proprietary platform, let alone one that’s run like Discord.
