I feel like by “scaling” they mean upgradability. So either vertical (adding more drives, ram, cpu) or horizontal (adding more boxes that loadbalance an increase of multiple parallel tasks/users)hahaha ooops
I mean, if you try to “scam” the gov, you can clone some codeberg repo to github, rename it, rewrite history to make the commits look like you did everything and then tell the gov “look at how much work I volunteered”. At least in germany, there are currently not enough public workers so many little things go unchecked.
21·15 days agoafaik the Ruhr Universiry of Bochum has an intranet that connects the uni and all the dorms. And they selfhost a couple of services, like email, git and pastebin. You can see a line going to the dorms on the graph.
a git history is easily fabricated. you can freely edit it, remove entries or write into it whatever you want, including impersonating other users and fabricating datetime

I personally know people that have a shitbox pc botched together from a landfill full of westerners trash and internet but can’t afford to pay for games. Their steam account is full of free games. They can replace one shitbox part for another if needed. No fucking loss.
Steam will go after gbr etc. then, not skme random users of it that they already banned according to you.

Afaik gbe, greenluma etc. can also be uses to play cracked games in multiplayer through steam.
Which you can’t do with family sharing unless there are multiple copies in the library (some games are excluded entirely) and not all friendgroups can afford that.

- you plugin new hardware and boot
- it doesn’t work
- 15 min looking for drivers online on obtuse websites
- suddenly the device works, because windows downloaded and installed something in the background
so more like - plug & i have no idea whats happening & play
if the government fucks around and gets Signal banned

I have 2 powered RAID enclosures from icybox with 2 multi TB HDD in each one. The RAID is set to mirror the drives.
They are connected via usb 3 to a raspberry pi which runs borgbackup.
One is in my own place, just next to the main server.
The other is at my parents place in another city.
All my desktops, laptops and servers have borgmatic installed with the two pi’s as two targets. So when I create a backup it gets send to both locations. On my PCs I manually do a borg backup like once a month when I feel like it. The server computers are all on a daily schedule.
Borg has extremely efficient compression and defuplication. So having 20 historical snapshots of the whole file storage of each device takes about 30% less space than the original size on disk.
For example my desktop currently uses ~800GB but the borgbackup of said desktop takes only ~500GB.
The only disadvantage I find is that there is no cross system deduplication.
The super useful advantage is that I was able to just take the HDD enclosure, plug it into my Desktop and restore whatever files I want. I did an rsync to a blank fs once and it restored everything properly. And it’s pretty cheap. like 150$ total per backup location without any significant monthly costs.
I used hetzners storagebox for a while for borgbackups but restoring from it was SO SLOW. And my internet connection is not stable enough to do that without interruptions for multiple days. Never again, except for using it as an extra last resort “cloud” backup.
