  • I have no data to back this up, but I would guess that no, they are not. It’s not that racists are immediately disgusted by the actual skin color or features of other people. Racism is a learned behavior that “others” people that are not in your “tribe”. You can also often tell if someone is a different race, by their accent, the way they speak, or the way they act. A lot of racism is based on stereotypes and tribalism, and the excuse of racists is that their dislike is based on their actions and culture, not their actual race. I also suspected that, though many blind people are very social and lead fulfilling lives, on average they are probably more used to being shut ins, or at least limited to a small amount of familiar areas. And the best cure for racism and xenophobia is travel. So yeah, I’d say that balances out the potential loss in racial discrimination based on not being able to actually see the person.

  • I’ve never done drugs or drank alcohol. I used to get a little too obsessed with hyper fixations when I was younger, so I figured that wouldn’t end well. I’d probably be fine now but like…why at this point?

I’ve been on a soda and coffee kick recently but I routinely cut it out completely and I’m usually the better for it. I’ll be heading back to the gym soon after not having time so it’ll probably be then. My body feels weird if I’m exercising but eating/drinking garbage Might have headaches for a few days depending on how bad your caffeine or sugar addiction was.

  • Same as anything else. Security updates are the new antivirus, but baked in. That’s the most important reason.

There are new features that you may not notice or use. But think about it, support for new resolutions, refresh rates, cable standards, VRR, HDR, drivers for new hardware and USB devices, improved drivers for existing hardware, bug fixes. All of this has happened within the last few years. Not to mention visually obvious changes like redesigning the Ui, aesthetics, adding new baked in programs.

  • To clarify, some versions of Linux are lighter weight with resources, and macOS does tend to take up more RAM at rest to make things pull up snappier, if you have it to spare. But their compression algorithm is better, and if you are using near the limit, it will be more efficient with the use of the RAM you have available before lagging. With Windows and Linux, it feels more like if you’re out of RAM you’re out if RAM. It’s less likely to happen at all on Linux though.

  • Advertising matters for movies. Every time someone says “movies suck now”, there’s always some guy that says “movies are great if you know where to look”. Sure, but where is that? I can find listicles with a few of them, but this is usually only the ones that break into mainstream, a year later. Even generic reddit and Lemmy/Piefed subs aren’t much better. It’s not feasible to ask someone to join a forum or Discord about indie movies just to not be fed slop.

  • Threat modeling is simply knowing where potential threats to yourself comes from, and planning accordingly. Most of us have some sort of risk of surveillance capitalism. Companies tracking you across sites, Ai scanning your email and photos, that sort of thing. As creepy as that is, if someone is targeting you specifically as a stalker or trying to break into your accounts, or physically into your home, that will be more important to model for. The things you to to. mitigate one thing may not be the same as something else. Sometimes they can be almost opposite actions, though there are certainly best practices to have in general.

If you know your threat model, you can find guides online of how to plan for it, and you can ask communities online more specific questions if you know what you are asking FOR.

  • Your technical knowledge as described is unironically far beyond the average user so I’d say you’re probably good. Depends on what you want to do though. You can occasionally have problems if you need to do something specific or are married to software that doesn’t exist on Linux. Word processing is down pat. You won’t have the app version of Microsoft Office, but there are open source alternatives like LibreOffice that are compatible with Office file types. For formatting, you may have to download some Microsoft owned fonts since they’re technically proprietary and not bundled with Linux/your office suite. In browser, Microsoft 365 and Google Docs works no differently than normal.

As someone else mentioned, you can test almost any distro on a live USB. There is also this site where you can remote in and test the general look and feel for free. You won’t have an internet connection though:
