Notice how you skipped Philadelphia, San Francisco, Los Angeles. Places with large gay populations. We have historical data we can use. There was no outage like this last Wednesday, was there? Texas isn’t known for being a gay friendly state, is it? The city of Dallas? Nope. You’re trying to present an abnormality as normal and it doesn’t pass the sniff test. YoYu getting into special pleading territory.

Sorry about not seeing LA. SF is there but at a totally different level, right?

The data says it’s true. Time after time. It’s not my narrative. It’s reality. Why do you need to say it’s not true? Why is it that Dallas is lit up like a Christmas tree exactly during the last hour of the scheduled event but not any other 8pm Wednesday in Dallas for a very long time?

If data has proven this time and again, surely you won’t mind directing me to this data.

          I wonder: are you gay?

I find importance in combatting this myth because as a queer person, it’s frankly tiring to hear “homophobes are just repressed self-hating gays, actually” over and over—usually from straight people. It’s the “adult” version of saying, “they’re just bullying you because they like you”.

What does this narrative do for anyone? It misses the point of why these people do what they do: they’re bigoted. It reframes the issue from being about straight people oppressing gay people to gays oppressing themselves. It functions as a quick “gotcha” to make these people look pathetic, and for us to feel “better” than them. Which, well… they’re Republicans. Do we need to grasp at straws, especially now? We don’t.

We never hear about “DNC conventions crash grindr”. Why? Are we to believe the percentage of gays—and all closeted, no less—is higher in the republican party than the democrats? I don’t find such a thesis compelling. In fact, Pew found in 2024 that over 80% of LGBTQ voters are democrats. Yet somehow, only GOP cons are a problem. I don’t think so.

If using gay people as a cheap cudgel against the GOP is more important to you; if you’re more invested in being right on the internet; that’s a you problem. Goodbye ✌️

It’s in the same vein as people lashing out at Hegseth for wanting to give testosterone to troops that want it with, “That’s gender-affirming care!”

Like… yeah? So? Do we not want gender-affirming care to be available to people?

That’s… not really the same at all. Because again, it’s about beliefs. I’ll wager Hegseth isn’t trans; yet we do know he’s a Deus Vult christofascist who thinks trans folks should die.

That is a separate issue from my belief that people should have access to HRT. But go off, I guess.

Yeah, I’m not saying Hegseth is trans. But “That’s gender-affirming!” is not the gotcha people think it is unless you fundamentally have a problem with affirming gender. It turns “gender-affirming” into an insult that is okay to use against people you don’t like, similar to declaring all homophobes to be closet-cases. Both perpetuate the specific type of hatred that the speaker is supposedly opposing.

Not saying it’s the exact same thing, but it’s similar.

Hold up. I insist that my position be accurately represented because otherwise you are arguing with a person you made up instead of me.

Reread everything I said. My position is that this happens at every Republican related convention. Not that it only happens then.

Can you correct your framing of my position to be accurate so that I know we are on the same page?

I’m sure there have been DNC related crashes too. But there is no built in hypocrisy because the DNC isn’t trying to repeal gay rights. You know that.

I skipped the rest of your comment because there was so much bad faith in that one sentence that I could see we weren’t having the same conversation.

Are you in the habit of listening to someone that is lying about who you are? There is no reason to reward someone who is arguing with a person they made up instead of the person they are talking with.
