Can’t they just block facebook.com as whole and call it a day ?
Who is still on Facebook anyways?
Has everyone forgotten about F.B. Purity (Fluff Busting Purity)? It’s a browser extension that lets you customize the entire interface of Facebook. It’s been around for 17 years and still works just fine.
I use it to remove not only ads, but FB games, marketplace, reels/videos, suggestions/featured content, FB Messenger, etc. I pretty much locked down my Facebook interface to only show me posts from my friends in the order that they were posted, with the latest at the top of my feed. Just like Facebook used to be before it started shoving useless content in your face.
The only reason I still have a Facebook account is because 90% of my friends, family, and contacts I’ve made over a lifetime of global travels, are all on Facebook. If I need to get in touch with someone, Facebook is where I’ll find them. But I don’t post anything to Facebook anymore; I rarely log on to it.
There isn’t another social media program where I can find everyone I know without subscribing to even more junk. I won’t use Instagram, Snapchat, Whatsapp, TikTok, or any of the other corporate social media programs, and most people I know/knew in person don’t use or understand the Fediverse.
Bluesky and Discord are as corporate as I’ll tolerate, and I’m already on the lookout for replacements for both. I used to have a Mastodon account a decade ago, before the Fediverse was a common thing, but I have no idea what site I built an account on. I might have to just suck it up and rebuild my account somewhere else. And there are plenty of Discord clones out there, but none quite as functional as Discord yet…
Not available for android. Boo.
Ads are more invasive than Zebra Mussels. We need to stop them completely! Is there even a gold standard anymore or is all economy everywhere resting on the wobbly foundation of advertising? That is, big guys making deals with other big guys to move their merch.
This is going to attract more interest in using Facebook advertising to deliver malware, knowing that the attack surface will grow substantially soon.
Without ad blocking, Facebook will become a dangerous place to visit if not done so within some sort of sandboxing.
Another reason to give up facebook. I’ve been off it for a decade.
And I’ve given up on Facebook ages ago. You should too.
Me as well been close to 10yrs, fuck zuck he should eat the barrel of his shotgun
He doesn’t deserve the same choice of ending as Kurt.
I wonder what kind if person thinks “you know what, today I will go in an make the world a little bit worse than it was before”…I simply cannot understand how people are willingly working at a place like Meta.
I simply cannot understand how people are willingly working at a place like Meta.
The same reason people are willing to napalm brown kids for Uncle Sam, a chance at a better life, price be damned. People will find a way to justify their life choices one way or another but it really comes down to wanting food and shelter. Yes, I realize that’s an extreme example but I hope you understand the point i’m trying to make. We live in a fucked up world that pits us against each other. When we fight each other, we’re too busy to fight our oppressors.

I think the guy from idiocracy was a better choice but this is accurate too lol
There’s just so many other options for making (plenty of) money, that doesn’t involve actively participating in making the world worse.
Like working on open source projects?
In light of recent mass layoffs I’d be quite interested what options of making (plenty of) money you think exist for developers that don’t actively make the world worse.
As a dev i can tell you the current job market is hell. If you like to feed you and your family meta is likely one of the better options currently. We are expected to do courses in our free time, watch the infrastructure on weekends while earning less than cashiers. Why i stay in this field? I already changed a field. I have two bachelors. Im tired.
Not to defend them too much but I’d assume that a lot of the employees are just trying to make a living. The department I’m working at was recently taken over and I have a mortgage and a kid so even if I morally disagree with some of the practices of my new employer I can’t just quit without uprooting the lives of my family.
It’s the same for the majority of workers stuck in big corporate jobs. The capitalist orphan crushing machine will crush all in the end. Not just the orphans.
What a bunch of BS. Yeah, I’m sure people working at FACEBOOK are destitute and have no options for any other jobs or employment, they’re completely unskilled and just have no fucking options. /S with a CAPITAL S
I can’t just quit without uprooting the lives of my family
That may be true for you, but it’s far from universally true. I have changed jobs several times (maintaining my industry) without even moving or uprooting anything for my family. I would wager most actually have viable alternative options without moving.
I’ve moved around a few times because I didn’t like the direction the company I worked for was heading. I didn’t have a plan when I moved, but each time I got a good raise.
People don’t because it requires effort and it can be scary.
I left my job over moral objections coming up on a year ago. Hundreds of interviews later, still unemployed. I don’t regret my decision, but I’m lucky enough to have a support system. Otherwise, I’d be out of luck.
Seems like me finally closing my Facebook account this week was timed well.
Supporting Facebook up until this week is far from being timed well.
Yall still using that shit?
What’s wrong with ublock origin?
I think they meant facebook
Woosh?
This lol
Should probably just block that whole privacy nightmare of a site, to be honest.
With a uBlock filter it’s so easy to do, too
Since some groups refuse to move off of Facebook, I use an add on to force anything tied to Facebook to its own tab container on Firefox. This is in addition to tampermonkey, ublock, and like 5 other things. I still feel like it’s not enough. They are a privacy nightmare, even on other sites.
Related, Zen Browser has tab routing built-in.
I mean why, it’s not worth it. People who don’t give a damn about privacy aren’t interested in ad blockers—quite the opposite.
That’s really unfortunate. Facebook today. Other large websites tomorrow.
Good, fuck em. Smol web, best web
I guess the intersection of people who use an adblocker and who are still active on Facebook is small anyway
Big enough that Facebook assigned people to continuously evade the ad blocking
