internet searches on this and other subjects repeatedly link to the lemmy sub on reddit… which doesn’t exist

That doesn’t give you a notification when there’s a new comment. I assume that’s what op means by follow.

I don’t think it’s possible, at least if it is I don’t know how either.

We sort of can on our wicked awesome cool people Pylova instance, a fork of stinky Piefed. Bookmark and also reply notifications. That’s a thing for both the entire post and individual comment chains, your own or others.

Lemmy webUI doesn’t have the same notification inbox feature, but the bookmark button is a Star icon on Lemmy instead of a Bookmark graphic.

Edit for better new user clarity.

On Lemmy, the save function (star icon) does give a number beside the comment count icon. Like 4 comments (2 new). Still a manual check, though.

Also Lemmy’s comment discovery (the chat sort method) is harder to follow with context, not as good as Kbin’s unread highlighting was.

It’s specifically only for top-level replies, fwiw. And you can see what you’re following under Activity Alerts.

If you want notifications for other people’s comments (not top-level) they have bells for that per-comment.
