There’s also the American Bar Association lawyer referral directory (or just put “[your state] bar association” into your search engine of choice and browse for its lawyer-finding resources).

Many places offer pro bono representation for those who cannot afford to defend themselves. Doesn’t mean it’s easy or that it isn’t a pain in the ass to have to go through the process but the alternative is letting the bastards win and that’s unacceptable to vertebrates.
