Might be useful for self-hosting when you’re away from home and don’t want to open your ports up to public internet traffic. Also whistle blowing is kind of in public interest. And circumventing regional censorship. Depending on the country the latter two might not be fully legal but it’s best if it stays this way. Hiding yourself from prying eyes of ISPS google and so on is also fully legal and important as you can be geolocated often to a few hundred meters without it.

Yeah no in no world would I call it perfect. The web version had problems of decrypting encryption keys without a phone also connected and syncing for me. I used to have an account with Element directly for a subscription so that I could have certain bridges. Since they discontinued this and botchered the transition they shut down that homeserver. I wasn’t paying for a while but I expected to still be able to use the normal account matrix features on their homeserver. They just shut it down and mentioned it a few months previously in their blog posts but I didn’t ever receive a mail or anything. Their data export/transfer tool stopped working with their home server shut down. I would argue actually for smaller instances because I don’t trust the Matrix.org team as they split of from Elements but small servers also have a risk because they often depends on individual admins

Hopefully they only increase prices in the US. I don’t want customers from other countries like in the EU make up for Trumps stupid tariffs.

Well its not discord so ofc there’s not as much traffic. And the decentralized listing is just part of the decentralized nature of it. Lemmy also doesn’t have as much traffic as reddit yet here we are

Yeah ofc Stoat is too, I’m just saying what I like about Matrix. I just personally don’t know of any third party Stoat clients but I also haven’t looked into it since I’m accustomed to Matrix. I checked their page but its pretty bare bones on information

Just use the Element client on desktop and Element X on mobile. Use the Matrix.org homeserver by the matrix foundation if you don’t know any other/better choice for you personally. Bam and you’re in. I actually really value the choice in clients tho. With the decentralized way of Matrix there’s lots of options but just pick the mainstream once for starters

Because its federated, is also a really nice messaging replacement and is E2EE. If I only want a discord replacement without anything else I’d consider stoat, but really I feel like Matrix just checks so many more boxes. I’ve used Matrix for a long time now. Also since its FOSS anyone can build a client for it and you can make it yours

I like element honestly, it has everything I need. Element call as a recent implementation is nice for that sort of thing. It also supports screen sharing

No not really. AMD is still producing cards. Most people play on older or used cards anyways. Maybe like don’t make Crysis level Graphics but other than that one year of less GPU releases won’t kill gaming. Once the AI bubble bursts NVDIA might have lost a lot of edge over AMD in the gaming market and they’ll scramble to get back
