  • It is, but I’m ready to officially throw in the towel and embrace the fact that running your own hardware is not much more than a hobby these days. I’ve preached and preached the value of multi or hybrid cloud, only for the people with money to pour it down the same hole time and time again.

I’ve always said IT is essentially an entirely CYA driven industry. Having someone to blame is more valuable for them than uptime, and if they can show their outages, even if the numbers suck, was not their fault (easy to do when all your competitors are down at the same time), it’s all good…

Update- lol, YouTube is currently down.

  • I’m not blaming the guy, but he seems smart enough that he should have known better. Data isn’t secure if it’s in a single location, he gave up control and the inevitable happened.

I do not trust anyone with my data, the more important, the more sure I am that I have copies in several locations, including ones that are entirely in my control. My photos exist on multiple devices, cloud, my selfhosted immich server and my offline backup. Same with documents and other important data. My ripped movie collection is not backed up since I have the physical media.

Do not give up control, the systems are all setup to give you the illusion of security, but then this kind of thing happens. Maybe I’m extra paranoid since I’ve been the victim of identity theft but I’m comfortable with my level of paranoia.

Update- for the record, yes, Apple needs to make this right. I DO NOT blame the victim, my comment is here as advice, not to shit on the dude.

  • *modern pickups are common offenders, often for false beliefs such as “my properly aimed headlights are fine”, when they are in fact not fine all the time because roads are not flat and smooth.

Not to harp, but roads not being smooth is a problem for all lights, not just pickups. If I’m behind someone, even close, my headlights are pointed below their rear window, I watch for where the line cuts off so as to intentionally not blind people. I’m high up and am often still blinded by any number of cars behind me though.

I totally agree that many truck drivers are assholes, and there’s a shitton of assholes with the squat and lifts and shit who never adjust them. Those are the ones to get mad at.

  • I mean, agree, but I’m a scout leader who towes at least monthly, had a bed full of wreaths to deliver yesterday for example… I’m a middle aged dude with a work from home job, so all of those are indeed considerations and I do my best to be conscientious. Besides, my properly aimed headlights produce less glare than all the aftermarket, poorly aimed ones that people who think the blueish light makes them look fancier.

It’s commmts like yours though that kinda irk me. I mean, if a grey 4 wheel drive pickup, with a bunch of campground stickers offends someone, that’s not really on me. I’ll take the hate from assholes any day.

  • It’s this realization that led me to buying a truck. I always wanted one but couldn’t justify it, too wasteful. Well, after this shitshow I realize that all my guilt has been to naught, only there to placate the masses to reduce in order for the billionaires to get away with anything.

So, when I needed a new vehicle, I got the one I wanted. Ironically it’s both the largest and best gas mileage car I’ve ever owned (still got a hybrid, but because it’s cool, gas savings are an appreciated benefit).

I still can’t shake all the guilt, but I absolutely love my vehicle at least.

  • It’s true. I have had a good number of jobs, I come, work on things, make improvements, then move on when I’ve grown or they are in a better spot. I honestly thought I was the guy coming in to help fix things and then move on once things are stable.

Instead, I have created a series of opportunities for them to blame the last guy to leave.

No matter how good of a job you do, unless you are there to remind folks, they will forget and use the easy scapegoat. I’m still very popular with the folks I worked with on the ground, but management types are primarily after someone else to blame…

  • I agree, but in truth I don’t believe Americans will support a third party unless we make it the gentlest, easiest transition possible. IMHO ranked choice is the only way we could get true third party support. And, that’s just one more at that point, we’d need them both out.

Sadly, most of this country is so disengaged from politics. It’s a team sport to most people, and let’s be honest, an expansion franchise without a fanbase will be next to impossible to successfully launch (my sportsball metaphors are weak).

  • I agree on all counts. I just think to get that party, we’ve got to get rid of the current ones. I’ve always been one to tackle the biggest challenge up front so my focus is still on the gop, but make no mistake, dems need to go too, at least the vast majority.

Thankfully there are folks working from the inside otherwise NYC would have turned out different. Honestly, their weakness means it’s an easier one to take back. I don’t care if the party names remain, but the power structure inside them needs to be gone yesterday.
