I got caught up working on my old house this summer. Doing carpentry and electrical and a half dozen other things. Nothing digital, only hands. I agree with you. Career politicians are not inherently bad. In fact, they can be very good, when someone strategically works for an issue or constituency over a long period and can enact long-term change, much like having a CEO for a decade vs having a CEO for a quarter. The problem is the corruption, which is not solved by term limits. Term limits actually make it easier to capture candidates, makes them cheaper and more disposable.
The states have had decades to fix this, they have done nothing. Federal intervention should have happened 10-15 years ago. That said, we live in an age where fixing problems is not rewarded, so it might have to get this bad or worse before people really want a solution despite it being complex and costly.
What is that heavily armed populace doing? They’re not resisting a government that has entered the information warfare age, where every police station has SWAT gear and tanks and helicopters. The guns aren’t saving you from the government, they’re not saving me from the government, they’re not saving Cletus on 10 acre compound if Uncle Sam decides to pay a visit with flashbangs and riot gear.

Well, sort of. It’s a giant ball of stupid to think what works in NYC will automatically work in any of the flyover states. If you come to the South and tell people you’ll make their lives better, they’ll hate you for it on principle. I do not think running a socialist ticket in Tennessee or Texas or even Iowa and Utah is going to work. There’s a weird duality to many of these countries - like it’s not illegal to be gay in either culture, but citizens can expect trouble if they form community. Whereas tourists are given free rein to be Western in tourist areas, and that means smiling as they take queer money.
