There’s a hotel room in Dallas where some young Republicans are all chuckling about how funny it would be to download Grindr to troll “the gays,” but they’re all secretly excited to check out the local scene.

Stunt? This happens every time there’s a big Republican event. It’s been like this for years.

      1. Republicans closet cases are going out of town and having fun before going home to their beards.
      2. It’s mostly bots and scammers on grindr anymore which doesn’t bother republicans because they fall for dumb shit constantly.
      3. This happens almost ritually and it’s funny.

As much as I think trump is a degenerate prick I bridle at this fake mudslinging. I think we have more than enough shit happening that we don’t have to make up even more shit. Makes the opposition look cheap and tawdry, just like trump and his meme goons.

Ya. This sub is terrible at removing posts like his. It’s just the same kind of strategy the magas use just on the opposite side of the spectrum.

I find it really gross that stuff like this happens.

This isn’t true, it’s never been true, and it’s just homophobia. source

TL;DW: down detector is based on user reports, all of the articles that report on this bullshit rely on down detector for “proof”. It’s just people trolling and we’ve been falling for it for years.

As you can see from grindr’s official status page there have been no outages yesterday (the start of the RNC) or today

Official status pages hardly tell the true story. They get tied to performance, so they become political to actually update with the real truth.

If you want to see a real example of this, look at the GitHub official status page versus the unofficial ones.

I’m not saying that downdetector is 100% perfect either

It’s not homophobia to call out hypocrisy.

There have been plenty of cases where pols voted for anti-LGBTQ+ laws, and then been abrubtly outed.

In June 2007, Larry Craig, a Republican U.S. Senator from Idaho, was arrested at the Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport on suspicion of lewd conduct during an undercover police sting in a men’s restroom

.According to the officer’s report, Craig entered a stall adjacent to the undercover officer, tapped his foot several times, moved it so it touched the officer’s foot, and waved his hand under the stall divider — actions the officer interpreted as a coded invitation for sexual activity

Larry gained fame when he blamed the incident on his ‘wide stance.’

      From Wikipedia.

Ok, so a closeted republican was caught cruising in 2007. What does that have to do with the (demonstrably false) claim that “republican events cause grindr outages”? And how does your single example from nearly 20 years ago prove that the claims about grindr aren’t false and homophobic?

Yes, the prominent association between 'Republican" and “closeted gay man,” is homophobic. No, there does not have to be 0% gay Republicans for it to not be homophobic. You are not pointing out “hypocrisy,” you are reasserting that it is in fact gay people always hurting themselves and hiding amongst us (not even to mention the literal pedophilia and child sexual violence that this admin is obviously participatory in and the association between “stranger danger” and gay men).

Even beyond that, to focus on the “hypocrisy” of gay Republicans for being gay and that being the problem obscures the racialized and class dynamics behind queer political representation, and queer history. These institutions unsurprisingly privilege property-owning, white people who have always been more insulated from the consequences of homophobia. It is not even remotely new or republican for wealthy gay men to be conservative or exhibit zero solidarity with the queer community because, guess what, they understand that they benefit from the subordination of those groups (and make no mistake, Dems who do vote for “pro-LGBT” laws are by no means doing so in solidarity with queer people; we are subjects of another genocidal wave in the US for a reason).

Even beyond that, no, making jokes about how Donald Trump is a bad guy because he sucks Putin’s cock or whatever is not pointing out “hypocrisy,” it’s just calling someone gay because it is synonymous with “weak,” or “submissive.” If the joke is indistinguishable from “real” homophobic jokes, then that’s just what it is. Liberals have had a hayday getting to express their bigotry with perceived righteousness now that they finally have a “deserving” group of people to channel it through.

It’s the same shit with the rampant ableism, fatphobia, queerphobia, and ageism that have become commonplace in liberal discourses that emphasize the “hypocrisy” of these people. What vulnerable group do I get to make fun of instead of you for how hypocritical you are?

Nice internalized queerphobia bud. Super cool how you used that redditor-ass meme to say you don’t read about how your community is subject to genocide. So like, you’re different from these guys?

              I did, and I think you’re wrong.

Pointing out hypocrisy is always right.

I didn’t put up a picture of Trump and Putin kissing, I put out a list of people who’d throw other gay people under the bus.

Best of both worlds, right? You get to be homophobic and righteous, and you don’t even have to worry about being canceled thanks to these guys.

What exactly is your problem with cons if this is the way you think? What, it’s the dropping the performance you take issue with? What are we meant to do about your hypocrisy then? Make fun of gay people even more? If it’s always right, and you don’t have to think about how it’s right, what’s wrong about me pointing yours out? Is it, perhaps, that you don’t actually subscribe to any of the values you are pretending to care about?

Well you can see why those secret conservative gays picked that guy as their bigoted Liberace to lead them into a technocratic feudal hellscape where Christian evangelical shariah law is implemented so they can stay closeted ad infinitum, perhaps get hunted down by gay ICE. He’s stunning. Just a perfect specimen of manly men who totally got carried by beefcake firefighters against his will during 9/11.

I saw a comment somewhere saying that the grindr usage peaks that people associate with republican conventions are actually pretty common in all sorts of events of this scale that involve a large crew of people for organizing and running the event.

I’m sure there’s plenty, but what I meant is that the grindr stuff is not necessarily proof that the politician themselves are gay, it could very well be their staff

I always read it as people saying the party in general has a big enough gay base and membership in general, including politicians and aids and attendees, that grindr always has issues when they gather in large numbers in one place. Which still seems true this week.

How does grinder go down in a specific location?

I’m sure the service is spatially partitioned, but I’m curious about the technical details
