  • Anna and the Apocalypse is pulling holiday double-duty. It’s a zombie survival musical set in the days before a school’s Christmas break. Insanely ambitious genre-bash, especially for the shoestring budget it was produced on, but a very fun way to kill 90 minutes.

Scrooged is undeniably more a Christmas movie than a Halloween movie, but it’s got some great spooky vibes. Especially with their portrayal of the Ghost of Christmas Future.

  • In a similar vein, my first thought was “did they control for economic factors?” Lower-income families are less likely to have adequate healthcare, less likely to enroll a child in pre-school or daycare, less likely to see an educator intervene if the child is missing milestones.

Especially in the US, there’s a history of conflating economic factors for genetic factors because of who has historically held wealth. Turns out playing golf doesn’t make you live longer, it’s just that if you can afford to play golf, you can probably afford healthcare and more nutritious foods.

  • Absolutely this. Ever since Nolan, we’ve been getting grimmer, darker, more “realistic” reboots of the character as directors try to figure out what Batman would look like in the real world. Burton and Schumacher asked the much funner question of, “What kind of crazy nonsense world worships a vigilante in a furry suit?”

  • Your problem, Henry, is that you are hung up on words, on labels: “gay”, “homosexual”, “lesbian.” You think they tell you who a person sleeps with, but they don’t tell you that. Like all labels, they refer to one thing and one thing only: Where does a person so identified fit in the food chain? In the pecking order. Not ideology or sexual taste, but something much simpler: clout. Who owes me favors. Not who I fuck or who fucks me, but who will pick up the phone when I call. To someone who doesn’t understand this, homosexual is what I am because I sleep with men, but this is wrong. Homosexuals are not men who sleep with other men. Homosexuals are men who, in 15 years of trying, can’t get a pissant anti-discrimination bill through City Council. They are men who know nobody, and who nobody knows. Now, Henry, does that sound like me?

  • One of my favorite moments in comics comes from the 1970 Green Lantern / Green Arrow run. Green Arrow rescues a kid from getting run over by a train, and rather than celebrate the victory, he laments that the city didn’t have a park where this kid could play safely. He considers running for mayor, and the rest of the Justice League talk him out of it.

As a kid, it was the first time I saw a comic look at the reader and say, “Yeah, these capes really are just fantasy. If you want the world to be better, you can’t leave it to other people.”
