  • ElementX does. But it’s glitchy. It won’t work for this purpose anyway.

What you need is a streaming platform for the video presentation, supported by a separate interactivity, similar to discord chat or something. Have the presenter supported by someone monitoring the feedback.

You do not need a group video call because there is no possible way to accommodate 3000 speakers. If they are just viewers, then streaming is appropriate. Interactivity can be accomplished through text and document uploads.

There are a huge number of options, depending on what kind of an institution you represent and what kind of commitment and membership students have. I have made bespoke set ups for something like this, and it really does depend on the variables.

  • Well, you are getting downvoted and it’s probably because “liberal” or centrist viewpoints are seen a bit like skeet shooting for some of the hard left on here. They seek ideological purity and are looking for a safe space.

But you know life is full of dogmatists eh. Some of them need blocking, and some of them need mocking. And some you can actually have a discussion with.

  • I use the Voyager app and it allows me to tag user names so that I can avoid blocking the borderline cases. I don’t mind people who are having a bad day or are just cranky, or maybe have attitudes I find annoying but not fully disturbing. I will of course block extremist authoritarians and such.

Since it’s a smallish social media community, I don’t really want to block all the discomfort away.

If I know what to expect from someone’s posts, it’s more entertaining than jarring when someone is being abrasive, and it helps me interject if things get out of hand.

I like that Lemmy/piefed is topic oriented, and not nearly as emotional as a microblogging space like mastodon, which is full of personal branding and ego and frequent annoyance at discussion when all someone wanted to do was make a posturing statement without friction or the jostle of other egos.
